David May para The Algemeiner

Northern Irish Soccer Authority Rejects Calls to Cancel Friendly Match With Israel

The Irish Football Association has rejected calls from BDS supporters to nix a friendly match between the country and Israel next month.

By: Ben Cohen/The Algemeiner
The top soccer authority in Northern Ireland has roundly rejected calls from supporters of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign to nix a friendly match between Northern Ireland and Israel next month.

The Irish Football Association — soccer’s governing body in the six counties that comprise Northern Ireland — said in a statement on Monday that it had “no intention of canceling Northern Ireland’s international challenge match against Israel on 11 September.”

What Is Richard Branson’s Problem With Israel?

Richard Branson is the business magnate who heads the venture capital conglomerate Virgin Group, known best for its Virgin Atlantic airlines and Virgin Mobile wireless communications brand. He has been dubbed a master at business and public relations, and has accrued billions of dollars through his dealings.

I have met him on a few occassions. Once, in Oxford, when he opened a restaurant with my friend, world-renowed chef Raymond Blanc. And again at the World Economic Forum in Davos. On both occassions he was friendly, approachable and very down-to-earth.

But a little known and unfortunate fact about Branson is his strange, anti-Israel opinions and activities that are beneath a man known for having a good and kind heart.

In 2007, Branson founded an organization called “The Elders,” which was made up of a council of 12 elder statesmen who would serve as “independent global leaders working together for peace and human rights.” One of the top goals and priorities of this organization is to inject itself into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and influence its outcome. Branson sits on the The Elders Advisory Council and uses his massive wealth to fund the organization. Unfortunately, the elders whom Branson selected for his new group are a Who’s Who of some of the most tenacious, anti-Israel public figures in the world today. The Elders’ anti-Israel statements and press releases condemning the Jewish state are a sad testament to this fact.

Topping the Elders’ list is former President Jimmy Carter, a man dedicated to the disgustingly fraudulent and antisemitic proposition that Israel is an apartheid state. Carter’s defamatory fabrications about the Jewish state include the lie not only that Israel is like apartheid South Africa, but that “voices from Jerusalem dominate our media.” Last year he claimed Netanyahu wasn’t interested in making peace, but said about Hamas’ arch terrorist leader Khaled Meshal, “I don’t believe that he’s a terrorist. He’s strongly in favor of the peace process.” It has been shown that the Carter Center receives tens of millions from countries with appalling human rights records that are dedicated to Israel’s delegitimization including Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE. He also received $500,000 from the antisemitic, terrorist-supporting Zayed Center, whose efforts he went on to praise the following year. The list of Carter’s actions and statements against the Jewish state are degrading to the august office of the presidency of the United States, even if they were stated after the fact.

Yet in 2014, Branson named Jimmy Carter as one of his “top five most respected people in the world,” and a man “ahead of his time.” At a conference in Egypt, Branson introduced Carter as “Perhaps arguably the most remarkable person alive today.” After pressing the audience to give Carter a second round of applause, Branson announced, “I think it’s fair to say that he’s one of the few people in this world who has stayed faithful to the Palestinians.”

Branson is a brilliant man. Does he really believe that someone who has allowed the Palestinians to continue in their self-defeating terror path is loyal to their cause? Surely Branson is aware that the only people dedicated to the Palestinians’ welfare are those who encourage them to democratize, spend money on schools rather than bombs, invest in universities rather than rockets and teach their children to love their own heritage rather than hate the Jews.

Other “elders” in Branson’s organization include the notoriously anti-Israel, antisemitic Bishop Desmond Tutu, whom I have also met on several occasions, including at the Oxford Union. Tutu is a supporter of the BDS movement, calling for an economic and cultural boycott of Israel. His bigoted views have surfaced with statements such as, “The Jewish lobby is powerful — very powerful,” while accusing Jews of “an arrogance — the arrogance of power because Jews are a powerful lobby in this land and all kinds of people woo their support.” Tutu has stated that Zionism has “very many parallels with racism,” and has accused the Jewish state of subjecting the Palestinians to “Israeli Apartheid.” He believes that the Palestinians are suffering more than the Jews did during the Holocaust, stating that “the gas chambers” had made for “a neater death” for the Jews.

Clearly such views are not just a moral abomination but represent a deplorable and uncleansable stain on the reputation of a man who won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Is this what Richard Branson had in mind when he stated in an interview, “And obviously after the Second World War, the world had enormous sympathy for the Jewish people. Over a number of decades, that sympathy has been lost…”?

I believe in my heart that Branson is a good and charitable man. So why say these things about the Jews?

Branson also tapped the corrupt former head of the UN, Kofi Annan, the same man who overruled UN General Romeo Dallaire in April 1994 and ordered him not to use his UN forces to disarm the Hutus in Rwanda and prevent them from hacking to death 800,000 Tutsis. Annan in the past declared that Saddam Hussein was a man he could do business with, and then sat down to smoke expensive cigars with the Butcher of Baghdad. He also declared himself “deeply moved” by the death of arch-terrorist Yasser Arafat and ordered the UN flag flown at half mast.

Also included in Branson’s Elders group is the man Kofi Annan appointed as United Nations special representative for Afghanistan and Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi. During Brahimi’s assignment he criticized Israel’s violence and suppression of Palestinians and called Israel “the big poison in the region.”

Nice.

Branson, apparently, sees eye to eye with Brahimi. After his 2009 trip to Israel with the Elders, Branson wrote, “On my return I rang my 92 year old father and told him of our trip. It’s strange” he said “that the Israel politicians seem to like keeping a wound open and festering year after year.” Now, perhaps his father said this out of ignorance. Perhaps he’s unaware of all the Israeli attempts to make peace with the Palestinans that ended with thousands of Israelis dead in suicide bomb attacks. But then Branson ought to know better than the response he gave his father: “Lets hope 2009 will be the year that the wound is healed.”

Branson’s crack team of peace-makers also includes Mary Robinson, the former head of one of the most corrupt anti-Israel organizations on earth, the UN Human Rights Council. During her time there, she presided over the Durban “World Conference Against Racism,” which has gone down in history as one of the most vile displays of public antisemitic in recent times. Yet she described the conference as “remarkably good, including on the issues of the Middle East.”

During the Gaza conflict of 2014, she and Jimmy Carter wrote a letter arguing for the recognition and inclusion of Hamas due to the genocidal terrorist group’s “legitimacy as a political actor.” The Elders had earlier that year praised the Hamas-Fatah unity government.

Robinson’s appointment on the Elders council isn’t surprising, seeing as how Branson ignored the fact that Hamas has fired more than 14,000 missiles at Israeli towns when he said, “Just watching Israel bombarding Palestine and Palestine sending one or two little rockets over to Israel — it’s just too sad for words. ”

Branson also has former President of Finland Martti Ahtisaari on the board, who has called on the Western world to end the boycott of Hamas.

Branson has been a very public figure in the business world. I actually admire the swashbuckling commercial image he has cultivated. Why does he have to tarnish his image and his brand with these anti-Israel statements and associations? Why pour millions of dollars into activities aimed at harming and weakening the Jewish State?

His organization continues to be a force for the defamation of Israel. Jimmy Carter recently spoke on behalf of The Elders, stating, “We have also encouraged Europeans for instance, at least to label products that are made by Israeli people who occupy Palestine and ship their products out of Palestine to be sold in Europe. … so that the buyers can decide whether they want to buy them or not.”

The time has come for Richard Branson to follow his generosity of spirit by dissociating himself from arch-Israel haters, ceasing to fund them and to support and stand behind the Middle East’s only democracy. After all, Israel is not just the Jewish state. As a bastion of freedom and human rights in the worldl’s most tyrannical region, it’s also the greatest Arab hope that one day Arab countries will similary copy its example of liberal democracy and human rights.

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, “America’s Rabbi,” is the international best-selling author of 30 books, winner of The London Times Preacher of the Year Competition, and recipient of the American Jewish Press Association’s Highest Award for Excellence in Commentary. He will shortly publish “The Israel Warrior’s Handbook.”

Israeli Jets Strike Damascus Targets, Syrian Media Says.

According to reports in Syrian media outlets affiliated with President Bashar Assad, Israel Air Force jets hit targets near the Damascus airport, Israel’s Channel 2 reported Wednesday evening.

The report, a breaking story that interrupted the nightly news, was neither confirmed nor denied by Israeli authorities.

Channel 2 military correspondent Roni Daniel said that Israel has made it clear it would not allow the transfer of weapons from Iran, via Damascus, to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

This is not the first time that air strikes in Syria have been attributed to Israel without confirmation from officials in the Jewish state. But this comes on the heels of meetings between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly held to coordinate operations in Syria — and ensure that there are no unwitting collisions between planes from their respective air forces.

During a visit to the US this week, Netanyahu gave insight into Israel’s Syria policy. He told an audience at a gala for the American Enterprise Institute that he laid out Israel’s red lines in Syria to Putin in September.

“We will not allow Iran to set up a second front in the Golan, and we will act forcefully — and have acted forcefully — to prevent that. We will not allow the use of Syrian territory from which we’d be attacked by the Syrian army or anyone else and we have acted forcefully against that. And third, we will not allow the use of Syrian territory for the transfer of game-changing weapons into Lebanon into Hezbollah’s hands, and we have acted forcefully on that. I made it clear that we will continue to act like that,” he said.

Report: Israeli Defense Official Says IDF, Russia to Coordinate Aerial Activities Over Syria.

As Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu heads to Moscow tomorrow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, an unnamed Israeli defense official said that the Israel Air Force has begun establishing a technical mechanism for coordinating aerial activities with the Russian military, the Hebrew news site Walla reported on Sunday.

This, explained the official, is to prevent problems identifying planes flying over Syrian airspace, where operations on the part of the U.S., Russia, Syria and Israel are currently taking place.

Meanwhile, according to a report in the Israeli news site, Mako, Netanyahu’s visit to the Kremlin, to impress upon Putin the danger that Russian military involvement in the Syrian civil war poses to Israel – as additional heavy weaponry could fall into the hands of Hezbollah and other terrorist organizations – is coinciding with the release of satellite photos reinforcing Israeli fears.

The photos show Russian Sukhoi-30 combat jets in the airstrip of the Syrian Army in Latakia.

The Israeli defense official told Walla that Netanyahu’s meeting with his Russian counterpart will include setting guidelines for their country’s respective armies, as they pertain to operations in Syria.

“The goal is to reach a high level of understanding between Israel and Russia, which takes on a more concrete meaning in the field than when discussed by the leadership. Ultimately, [working this out] is in the interest of both sides,” he told Walla.

Source: Israel Believes Assad Has No Control of Situation on Golan Border.

Israel believes Syrian President Bashar Assad has become so embroiled in civil war, he does not have the capacity to prevent terrorist groups on the country’s border with Israel from provoking the Jewish state, such as last week’s rocket attacks deep into northern Israeli territory, diplomatic officials told The Algemeiner.

This admission, spoken by a diplomat on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the security situation in northern Israel at present, came on the heels of Israel’s accusation that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corp — in charge of maintaining and spreading the Islamic Revolution — had ordered Palestinian Islamic Jihad to fire four rockets at the Israeli Golan Heights. The assault was followed by a stinging overnight Israeli air campaign that killed five and struck more than a dozen targets.

The flare-up of violence at the Israeli border with Syria — a long-quiet front that has grown increasingly restive as terrorist groups, anti-government rebels, Hezbollah and Syrian forces confront each other amid the Syrian civil war — also came as the Israeli military conducted a series of training exercises over the past couple of weeks simulating a limited ground incursion into Syria, apparently in response to a potential massive rocket attack by terrorists at the border.

The Israeli military also staged a response to chemical attacks, realizing that some groups near Israel may have gotten a hold of such weapons, but military officials said the likelihood of terrorists using chemical warfare was low.

A recent document prepared by IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and revealed to the public earlier this month stated that while Israel still sees Iran as an existential threat — the diplomat, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The Algemeiner that Iran is still unequivocally Israel’s top concern — the military views its main enemies as terrorist groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria, and Hamas. Recent reports however, staunchly denied by Israel, have suggested that the Jewish state and Hamas may be approaching a long-term truce aimed at maintaining calm and allowing Gaza to rebuild following last summer’s conflict.

The diplomat told The Algemeiner that despite everything Iran has at stake — the pending P5+1 agreement to lift international sanctions and the crumbling situation in Syria — the Revolutionary Guard felt the need to remind Israel of its influence near its border, perhaps as a warning against Israeli attempts to exploit Hezbollah’s tied hands assisting Assad in Syria to push the group back.

On Saturday, Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai reported that Hezbollah was on high alert along the border with Israel, fearing an IDF operation that could escalate into an all-out war.

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon meanwhile expressed concern “concerning flagrant violations of the disengagement agreement between Israel and Syria,” warning both Israel and Syria to refrain from steps that could endanger the decades-old ceasefire and spark another regional conflict.

The Nature of the Abbas Regime.

http://49yzp92imhtx8radn224z7y1.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/abbas-rt.jpg
Most Palestinians have turned against PA President Mahmoud Abbas. Photo: Screenshot.

The nature of President Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority has turned most Palestinians against the PA president and has led most Jerusalem Arabs to prefer Israeli sovereignty. It has also catapulted Hamas to prominence on the Palestinian street.

The Abbas regime has been characterized by a rare combination of endemic corruption, kleptomania (“Mr. 20%” is Abbas’ nickname), nepotism, hate education, incitement, terrorism, an anti-U.S. and pro-Venezuela, Russia and China worldview, noncompliance with internal and external agreements, and egregious violations of civil liberties. All this has fueled Muslim emigration and the flight of Christian Arabs from Bethlehem, Beit Jala and Ramallah.

The nature of the Palestinian Authority has been shaped since its establishment in 1993 by the late Yasser Arafat, by Abbas and by other Palestinians imported from terrorist camps in Sudan, Yemen, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya and Tunisia, imposing themselves ruthlessly upon the indigenous Arabs of Judea and Samaria. In 2003, I was rebuked by a prominent Palestinian: “We shall never forgive the Jewish state for imposing upon us the Tunisia-based PLO Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Irrespective of the nature of the Palestinian Authority, the U.S. has been, by far, its largest single-state donor (averaging $500 million annually, in economic and security assistance). In addition, the U.S. has led the pack of donors to the U.N. Relief and Works Agency ($250 million in 2014), which has not reduced the threat of incitement or hate-education-driven Palestinian terrorism. It has not inclined Palestinians toward peaceful coexistence with the Jewish state, nor has it advanced the cause of democracy and human rights in the Palestinian Authority.

In September 1993, on the eve of the conclusion of the Oslo Accords, Elias Freij, the Christian mayor of Bethlehem, and other Christian leaders from Bethlehem and Beit Jala (unsuccessfully) implored then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to refrain from transferring both towns — which were included in the Jerusalem District during the Ottoman, British and Jordanian rule — to the emerging Palestinian Authority. They expected severe oppression of Christian Arabs by the Palestinian Authority, which would cause Bethlehem and Beit Jala to be “top heavy on churches, but very low on Christians.” And indeed, Bethlehem’s Christian majority has been reduced to a 15 percent minority.

Before the signing of the Oslo Accords, I introduced the New York Times‘ William Safire to a former mayor of Beit Jala, Farah al-Araj, who predicted that “the current state of affairs will produce a larger community of Beit Jala Christians in Belize than Christians left in Beit Jala.” In 2015, Christian emigrants from Beit Jala achieve prominence in Belize, politically and financially, while those remaining in Beit Jala are oppressed religiously and physically.

Abbas’ stashed accounts and nepotism were highlighted by the anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian Stephen Lendman, who accused Abbas of “bribes, secret investments and hidden bank accounts … earning $1 million monthly. … Abbas holds several Jordanian accounts … not under any national or international scrutiny. … Abbas urged Moscow to supply him with a new advanced presidential jet. … His sons, Tarek and Yasser, profit handsomely from all PA projects.”

According to Jonathan Schanzer, “The conspicuous wealth of Abbas’ own sons, Yasser and Tarek, has become a source of quiet controversy in Palestinian society. … Yasser enjoys a monopoly on the sale of U.S.-made cigarettes … chairs a Palestinian engineering conglomerate … boasting $35 million annual revenues. … Tarek is just as ambitious in the business world.”

Bassam Eid, the founder of the Jerusalem-based Palestinian Human Rights Monitoring Group, concludes that “the Palestinians need strong democratic institutions and an end to human rights violations. … [However], Abbas runs a corrupt dictatorship, using international funds to consolidate his own administration, rather than to develop the Palestinian economy. In east Jerusalem, the PA is so mistrusted that most Palestinians would prefer to live under Israeli rule.”

American interests, morality and common sense should prompt the U.S. Congress to condition further foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority on dramatic transformation of its conduct.

Kerry: Netanyahu’s Iran ‘Mythology’ Not Going to Happen.

Secretary of State John Kerry. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.
Secretary of State John Kerry is still confident an Iranian nuclear deal is possible. Photo: Wikimedia Commons.

Attempts by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to secure a more stringent nuclear deal with Iran are “not gonna happen,” Secretary of State John Kerry said in an interview published Tuesday.

“The whole mythology I’ve heard, from [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu to Republican members of the House and Senate — ‘Oh, just squeeze them to death, raise the sanctions’ — not gonna happen,” Kerry told The Boston Globe.

He said the deal in its current form would scale back the amount of time it would take Iran to produce enough fissile material to make a nuclear bomb from three months to one year, and it would require daily inspections of Iran’s enrichment facilities for the next “25 years.”

The secretary of state, who along with negotiators from the UK, Russia, China, France, Germany and of course Iran has been trying to hammer out a deal by June 30, lamented the possibility that Congress could kill an agreement even if all the countries involved accepted it.

“Look, if Russia, China, Germany, France, and Britain, all of whom have nuclear programs, sign off on this, and all their experts say it’s a good deal, and Congress for political reasons wants to go kill it, they’re walking away,” he said.

He said this will spell the end of the sanctions regime because none of these countries would back it if they felt a good deal had gone to waste.

Netanyahu meanwhile on Wednesday continued to rally against the current framework, calling it a “historic mistake” and comparing it to the framework the US signed with North Korea in 1994, about 12 years before the Asian country conducted its first test of a nuclear bomb.

Speaking alongside the vice prime minister of South Korea, Netanyahu said: “It was said then that supervision would prevent enrichment, it was said then that the [agreement] would temper North Korea’s belligerent leadership, it was said then that the [agreement] would allow North Korea to integrate into the family of nations.”

He said the framework announced following negotiations with Iran in Lausanne, Switzerland, “repeats these mistakes.”

Palestinian Foreign Minister: We Are Not Preparing for Negotiations With Israel.

The Palestinian Authority’s Minister of Foreign of Affairs on Sunday denied reports that his government was building a team for the renewal of peace talks with Israel.

In an interview on “Voice of Palestine” radio, Riyad Al-Maliki said that the Palestinian leadership has not put together a new negotiations team, given the lack of international or regional initiatives to renew peace talks.

Al-Maliki also took the opportunity to criticize Israel, and claimed that the Jewish state is not interested in renewing talks with the Palestinians.

Al-Maliki’s comments came in response to a report by Palestinian news agency Quds Net which cited sources close to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas indicating that he was setting up a negotiations team at the request of the United States, Israel’s NRG reported.

According to the Quds Net report, this American-backed negotiation team includes Palestinians with political and business influence as well as Palestinian security officials.

Lebanon based terror group Hezbollah has constructed an airstrip in the northern Bekaa Valley for the takeoff and landing of its unmanned aerial vehicles, satellite imagery has revealed.

Reports by IHS Jane’s indicate the airstrip was built in a sparsely populated area slightly south of the northern Lebanese region of Hermel, bordering the Syrian border, sometime between February 27, 2013 and June 19, 2014.

The airstrip itself is very simple. It consists of a single unpaved strip that is 670 meters long and 20 meters wide. Materials for the strip were taken from a nearby quarry to build up its northern end and to level it out.

The short length of the air strip indicates that it is not used to smuggle in weapons from Syria or Iran, since it is too short to be used by nearly all other transport aircraft used by either country’s air force, with the exception of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ An-74T-200 short take-off transports.

According to Jane’s, the most likely explanation is that the runway was “built for Iranian-made UAVs, including the Ababil-3, which has been employed over Syria by forces allied to the Syrian regime, and possibly the newer and larger Shahed-129.” Hezbollah has already confirmed that it is using UAVs to support its operations against opposition forces in Syria, particularly over the strategically-important Qalamoun region on Lebanon’s eastern border.

An antenna, which might be used to extend the range of a local UAV ground control station, is also located close to the strip, along with six small utility buildings, though none are large enough to house an Ababil-3. However, according to Jane’s, “there is a facility constructed in a valley 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) west of the airstrip that includes two utility buildings large enough to house UAVs.”

The site is also guarded by a checkpoint and swing gate, similar to other Hezbollah facilities that are located across Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley.
