Afghanistan Has Lessons for the Gulf

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 2,156, September 20, 2021

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Gulf states will closely monitor the way Russia and China handle the perceived security vacuum in the wake of the US withdrawal and abandonment, for all practical purposes, of Central Asia. They wish to determine to what degree those countries might be viable alternatives for a no longer reliable US security umbrella in the Middle East. They are also likely to push to strengthen regional alliances, especially with Israel.

The Gulf states appear to be stuck, for the time being, with a less committed US. That reality will push them to compensate for uncertainty over the US with greater self-reliance and a strengthening of formal and informal regional alliances,

¿Podrían emigrar a Israel?

Joe Biden’s Catastrophic Judgment

The Taliban’s seizure of control over Afghanistan will loom large over Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s visit with U.S. President Joe Biden next Thursday, and its implications are dire.

As Taliban forces seized control of one Afghan province after another, and everyone who was paying attention recognized that the capital Kabul would soon follow, Biden went on a two-week vacation.

The footage of the Taliban takeover of Kabul stunned the American public. The scenes of dozens of Afghans hanging off a U.S. military C-17 already wheeling

Will the Taliban welcome al-Qaeda back to Afghanistan?

Afghanistan’s fragile economy

Afghanistan ranks as one of the most at-risk, fragile economies in the world. Poverty is endemic, as is underdevelopment, because of long-term, high-intensity conflict, according to the World Bank. And that was before the COVID-19 pandemic. The other countries on this short, grim list include the Central African Republic, Libya, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

AMERICA IS ON THE RUN AFTER AFGHANISTAN

No moment in our generation will be seen as defining as the fall of Kabul in the summer of 2021. It marks the end of one empire and the start of another.

The USA staked everything over control of Afghanistan. However, after trillions of dollars spent, thousands of USA army dead, and 20 years occupying a distant land, America fled Afghanistan – leaving the country in control of Islamist militants – the same ones they supposedly routed after the attack on the World Trade Center.

The real story here is not America leaving Afghanistan. The US Military had stayed way beyond what would have been deemed comfortable. The real story is how they

Tehran ready to pounce on Afghanistan and Mideast foes in more aggressive stance

The collapse of the Afghan military could serve as further motivation for Iran to target U.S.-allied Gulf states such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as countries like Jordan.

(August 16, 2021 / JNS) Newly installed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi celebrated the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan and the failure of the United States to leave smoothly after 20 years entrenched in the country, marking the beginning of what’s likely to be a more aggressive stance there and on other fronts in the Middle East.

American leaders have accused Iran of backing the Taliban in the fight against its military forces in Afghanistan. While a withdrawal was announced by the Biden administration earlier this year, what has happened over the course of the past few

Jewish Democrats slam Omar for remarks equating Israel and US to Hamas and Taliban

A dozen stated that “ignoring the differences between democracies governed by the rule of law and contemptible organizations that engage in terrorism at best discredits one’s intended argument and at worst reflects deep-seated prejudice.”

(June 10, 2021 / JNS) A dozen Jewish Democratic lawmakers have issued a statement strongly condemning recent remarks made by Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who equated Israeli and U.S. actions to terrorist groups like Hamas and the Taliban.

In a tweet on Monday, she wrote: “We must have the same level of accountability and justice for all victims of crimes against humanity. We have seen unthinkable

Omar forces a difficult choice for Jewish Democrats

Fear of being accused of racism and Islamophobia caused the majority of the caucus to refuse to condemn her analogizing Israel and the United States to Hamas and the Taliban.

(June 10, 2021 / JNS) After a surge in violent anti-Semitism inspired in no small part by vicious attacks on Israel by members of their party’s left-wing, some Jewish Democrats have had enough. After Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) compared the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban, the 25 Jewish members of the House of Representatives who are Democrats (two others are Republicans), met informally. Their discussion focused on whether it was time to rebuke Omar by
