Last November, when US President Donald Trump met Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in the White House, they shared a moment of laughter. Trump had provided the Syrian leader with some of his Trump-branded cologne. “It’s the best fragrance,” he said.

Trump also said some of his brand’s perfumes were for Sharaa’s wife. Trump joked about whether Sharaa had more than one wife. Trump also seemed to spray the male version of the cologne on the Syrian foreign minister.

Will Syria’s Druze, Kurds & Alawites become Israel’s new allies? Past failures pose serious warnings

Israel’s Syria policy was vindicated – but it should remember lessons of failed minority alliance.

The fall of the Assad regime in Syria destroyed a hostile regime on Israel’s doorstep and opened the possibility of permanently changing the security situation on the northern front.

Israel reacted by conducting an intensive diplomatic initiative against Syria’s new, Islamist-dominated regime while reaching out to the country’s minorities – but it would do well to remember the past failures of similar ventures.

British Jewish comedian and actor Sacha Baron-Cohen called out the BBC for its biased reporting on the Hezbollah massacre of 12 children in the Druze town of Majdal Shams in Israel's Golan Heights. The Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah fired an Iranian-produced rocket that killed the children and youth while they were playing at a soccer field.

“Eleven dead in rocket attack on Israeli-occupied Golan,” BBC wrote in its original headline, failing to mention Hezbollah as the perpetrator. The British news network also emphasized its bias against Israel by using the expression

As ties to Syria fade, Golan Druze increasingly turning to Israel for citizenship

After years of eschewing offers, record numbers of Druze are quietly applying to become Israeli, motivated not by newfound Zionism, but convenience and a drift away from Damascus.

In the four decades since Israel effectively annexed the Golan Heights, the Druze residents of the volcanic plateau have zealously maintained their Syrian identities and ways of life. From signage that gives no quarter to Hebrew to farms that ship their produce across the border rather than down the road, sharp-eyed visitors can see how the community has thoroughly rejected integration into Israel, instead maintaining strong commercial, social and academic ties to Damascus.

A new master plan consisting of some 60 projects to further develop the Western Galilee is being considered by decision-makers in the Ministry of Construction and Housing.

The plan seeks to strengthen existing communities and the local economy, growing the population from about 300,000 to over 600,000 within the next 20 years. It envisages the Western Galilee becoming a leader in blue technology — technology that makes use of water resources — and in food technology, a growing area of interest globally in which Israel is playing a leading role.
