Yom Kippur 50 years later: Rethinking Golda’s reputation
The anniversary of the traumatic war has led to a surge of interest in Meir’s life. However, the lessons of the conflict go deeper than a boost in her historical stock.

(September 26, 2023 / JNS) - There is an axiom in journalism that you never know when you’re going to do the one thing for which you will be remembered above all others. Few lives exemplify that lesson better than that of Golda Meir, Israel’s first female prime minister. By any reasonable historical standard, hers was an extraordinary life of achievement in which, as much as any other person, she exemplified the saga of the Jewish people during the 20th century.

In death as in life, Yael Dayan is an inconvenient Israeli
Dayan spent her life making the country a more decent place, which may be why the world press stayed silent on her passing.
This is just a theory. Maybe just a conspiracy theory. You can be the judge.
Yael Dayan died last week and no major world newspaper ran an obituary or even mentioned her. Not the New York Times, not the New York Post, not the LA Times, not the Globe, not the Times of London or the Telegraph or the Guardian, not Le Monde or Le Figaro, not Die Zeit or Die Welt.

EHUD BARAK INTERVIEW: ‘Yom Kippur war was an operational victory to surpass even 1967’

Fifty years ago this week Egypt and Syria invaded Israel in a surprise attack during Yom Kippur. To mark the anniversary, former Prime Minister Ehud Barak spoke to Jewish News about his predecessors’ existential failures ahead of the conflict and how they managed to overcome the odds to complete one of the most “brilliant military victories” in Israel’s history.

Prime Minister Golda Meir expressed grave concerns to military officials in the early days of the 1973 Yom Kippur War about the potential lack of help from an international community she viewed as unsympathetic toward Jews, newly released documents show.

Why is support for ‘freedom of worship for Jews’ on the Temple Mount so controversial?
Bennett’s statement deserves support, but it will have diplomatic and political repercussions. If he backs down, the consequences will involve more than the right to prayer at a holy site.

(July 19, 2021 / JNS) Maybe it was just the product of the ongoing civil war between the different political parties on the Israeli right. Or maybe it was just time that an Israeli prime minister said something that, in a saner world, wouldn’t be considered controversial. But whatever motivated Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to

Golda Meir’s Most Fateful Decision
Blamed for the 'blunder' of the 1973 war, the sole female prime minister of Israel, should be appreciated for her fortitude in preventing a preemptive attack on the country's enemies.
All of Israel’s prime ministers have had to make fateful decisions during their terms of office. The grimmest of them have to do with wars – how to prevent one, whether to launch one, how to end one. These are life-and-death matters, for which the decision makers have always paid a high and intolerable psychological and political price.

Golda Meir: The Civilian Who Exposed Israel’s Lack of Preparedness for the 1973 War

BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,773, October 9, 2020
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Although Israeli PM Golda Meir lacked military knowledge, her questions during government discussions on the eve of the Yom Kippur War exposed the fact that deterrence and early warning, the two cornerstones of Israel’s security conception, had not been adequately addressed. If the IDF officers and the many bithonistim (officials with a security background) in her government had heeded her questions, the war could have gone very differently and perhaps even have been averted.

The Long Roots of the Yom Kippur War Debacle
BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 1,760, September 27, 2020
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The IDF’s difficulties at the outset of the 1973 Yom Kippur War stemmed from an inherent command flaw rather than an intelligence failure as is commonly believed. The roots of this flaw date back to 1957, when Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan decided on an early retirement age for IDF personnel so as to enable them to embark on a second career. Defense Minister David Ben-Gurion, who saw the dangers of the decision, opposed it but did not use his authority to revoke it.
As the cardinal lesson from the War of Independence, the Israeli defense establishment decided, as Prime Minister and Defense Minister David Ben-Gurion

Bonds building bonds: On its 70th birthday, honoring generations of sound investment
“Bonds are the best of both worlds,” insists Israel Maimon, president and CEO of Israel Bonds. “They give people who care about Israel the opportunity to combine their loyalty and love for her with a financially rewarding investment for them and their children. Every dollar invested strengthens the only Jewish state on the planet.”

(September 22, 2020 / JNS) If anyone in your family celebrated a bar or bat mitzvah, a wedding or the birth of a baby after Sept. 3, 1950, then the chances are good at least one Israel bond was received as a gift—one that for seven decades remains a gift that keeps giving.
It’s been exactly 70 years this month since Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion announced the concept of Israel bonds to a group of leaders at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. The following year (in 1951) he launched the US campaign from the stage of New York’s Madison Square Garden.
