Zionist Congresses: The Biltmore Conference (May 6 - 11, 1942)

The Biltmore Conference was called by the Extraordinary Zionist Conference, and was held from May 6 to May 11, 1942 in New York. Due to the war, no Zionist Congress could be held that year. The Extraordinary Zionist Conference was thus called to serve a similar purpose of forming Zionist policy.

Participants from a wide variety of Zionist organizations were represented at the Conference. The joint statement issued at the end of the session was known as the Biltmore Program. The Program reiterated Zionist demands for unrestricted Jewish immigration to Palestine and that Palestine should serve as a Jewish Commonwealth. This statement was the first in which non-Zionist organizations joined with their Zionist counterparts to publicly advocate the establishment of such a Jewish Commonwealth.

Declaration Adopted by the Biltmore Conference:

That Other Time They Almost Declared a Jewish State (and No One Noticed)

In July 1943, in the midst of World War II, notable members of the "yishuv" gathered in secret in a Tel Aviv suburb, to proclaim the establishment of a Jewish government in the Land of Israel.

Few people are aware that the declaration of independence of the State of Israel on May 14th, 1948, (the fifth day of the month of Iyar in the year 5708, according to the Hebrew calendar) was preceded by another, almost clandestine ceremony, in which the establishment of a Jewish government in the Land of Israel was proclaimed.

Why is Israel again abandoning the Solomonic wisdom of the Western Wall compromise?

A coalition avowedly committed to advancing consensual issues is, deplorably, instead capitulating to extremists over access for the Jewish people to our holiest place for prayer.

Natan Sharansky offered advice to cope with COVID lockdowns. Now, he’s recovering from the virus.

Last year, Natan Sharansky recorded a video on how to handle quarantine based on his experience as a political prisoner. (Screenshot)

(JTA) — When the world shut down last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Natan Sharansky figured his experience as a Soviet political prisoner meant he had a thing or two to teach the millions of people who were suddenly confined to their homes.

So he recorded a video providing his advice that went viral among the many Jews around the world who have long seen him as a sage figure.

Nearly a year and a half later, Sharansky, 73, announced on Facebook that he and his wife, Avital, had contracted the disease. The Israeli couple had both been vaccinated months ago, and are both recovering.

Former MK Yehuda Glick, who spent years as an activist for one of the most politically sensitive sites in the world, says that the presidency should not be political. What Israel needs, he thinks, is a president who can talk to everyone and bring the people together.
