OPINION: Palestinian statehood recognition now betrays Labour’s better traditions

Labour has two paths to choose from: the failed legacies of Bevin and Corbyn, or successful ones like Blair's Northern Ireland Peace Agreement.

Then prime minister Tony Blair (right) with then Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, outside Downing Street.

The Labour Party has a complex history with Israel. The post-war Labour government neither intended to recognise the Jewish state nor support its UN membership, abstaining from the UN Partition vote in 1947. Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin told his US counterpart that Britain was “unanimous” in opposing a Jewish state, calling the Balfour Declaration an “unfortunate error.”

When Netanyahu’s own hitmen came gunning for him

The PM placed Itamar Ben Gvir and Yitzhak Goldknopf at the heart of his government, and has indulged their reckless activities for two years. They rewarded him with an act of spectacular ruthlessness, showing utter contempt for his health

Gustavo Perednik.

West Bank security fence has been Israel's lifesaver - architect

20 years later, the security fence built following the second intifada has proven to be a lifesaver. Literally.

Semantics matter in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Is it the West Bank or Judea and Samaria? Are the areas Israel gained control over in the Six Day War “occupied” territories or “disputed” ones? Do Jews beyond the Green Line live in “settlements” or “communities?”

More often than not, the word selection reflects a worldview.

A US visa waiver for Israelis? Doubtful

It’s unlikely that the promise given to Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett will carry any more weight than those handed out by the United States over the past 20 years.

(August 31, 2021 / JNS) A visa waiver is a sign of deep friendship and trust between nations. The United States has waiver arrangements with about 40 countries, including some—like Chile or Brunei—that do not enjoy the same level of closeness with the United States that Israel does. Citizens of Israel, the United States’ most important strategic ally in the Middle East, still need to request visas,

Withdrawal from Gaza - Full Documentary

Withdrawal from Gaza tells the sad story of the unilateral Israeli disengagement from Gaza in August 2005.

Approximately 8,700 Israelis settled there after the 1967 Six Day War and establishing over 20 vibrant Jewish communities including the Gush Katif settlements.

Through agriculture they produced about $100 million annually until the day the Israeli government decided all the inhabitants had to leave.

The lessons Menachem Begin left us

As Israel prepares for a change in leadership, a new documentary film on one of the country’s founding fathers is a reminder of what his successors can learn from him.

(June 11, 2021 / JNS) The release of a new documentary film about one of Israel’s past prime ministers wasn’t timed to coincide with a historic change in power in Jerusalem. But the coincidence adds to the timeliness of Jonathan Gruber’s “Upheaval: The Journey of Menachem Begin,” which became available this week via virtual theaters for home viewing.

Israel has made it; now it needs to grow up.

At independence, Israel was little more than a spark of light – a tiny spark – in the Jewish world. From a total of 11.5 million Jews alive on the 5th of the month of Iyyar in the Jewish year 5708, (May 14, 1948), only 650,000, or 6% lived in Israel. In contrast, the day Israel was founded, some five million, or 43% of world Jewry were living in the United States.

Fast forward 73 years and that little spark of light is now the sun in the Jewish solar system. With 6.9 million Jews out of a total of 14.9 million, not only is Israel the largest Jewish community in the world by far with 47% of world Jewry living within its boundaries, by 2030, the majority of world Jewry will be living in the Jewish state.

Barak: Goal of first Lebanon War was to turn Jordan to Palestinian State

The former prime minister told Maariv that the late Ariel Sharon was very clear when he told ministers Israel’s end goal was to drive PLO into Jordan but they “didn’t understand or pretend not to."

The goal of the First Lebanon War was to drive the PLO out of Lebanon and into Jordan, former prime minister Ehud Barak said in an interview with Maariv, the sister publication of the Jerusalem Post.

The Israeli hope was that the PLO would have “learned the lessons of Black September (1970)”, when it clashed with Jordanian forces and was forced to leave Jordan – turning the country into the de facto Palestinian state, he said.

Bonds building bonds: On its 70th birthday, honoring generations of sound investment

“Bonds are the best of both worlds,” insists Israel Maimon, president and CEO of Israel Bonds. “They give people who care about Israel the opportunity to combine their loyalty and love for her with a financially rewarding investment for them and their children. Every dollar invested strengthens the only Jewish state on the planet.”

(September 22, 2020 / JNS) If anyone in your family celebrated a bar or bat mitzvah, a wedding or the birth of a baby after Sept. 3, 1950, then the chances are good at least one Israel bond was received as a gift—one that for seven decades remains a gift that keeps giving.

It’s been exactly 70 years this month since Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion announced the concept of Israel bonds to a group of leaders at the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. The following year (in 1951) he launched the US campaign from the stage of New York’s Madison Square Garden.
