Netanyahu pushes Smotrich, Ben-Gvir merger to protect right-wing bloc

Although most polls show Religious Zionism, which is led by Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, passing the electoral threshold, the numbers are too close for comfort for Israel’s premier.

(Jun. 10, 2026 / JNS)  Polls tend to show the Religious Zionism Party, a key part of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition, passing the electoral threshold, but the numbers appear to be too close for comfort for the Israeli premier.

Netanyahu is urging the party, which Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich leads, to merge with the Otzma Yehudit Party (“Jewish Power”) to

(November 6, 2022 / JNS) Mansour Abbas, the leader of Israel’s Islamist Ra’am Party, has expressed concern that the country’s incoming coalition will change the status quo arrangement on the Temple Mount, a move he said would lead to violence.

In an interview with Channel 12 on Thursday, Abbas said he was “worried” that opposition head Benjamin Netanyahu’s prospective coalition, expected to consist of his Likud Party, the Religious Zionism Party, Shas and United Torah Judaism, would move to allow Jewish prayer on the Mount.

Israel may have lost its Jewish-Arab coalition - opinion

If Bennett can make it to the end of the summer Knesset session, there's a good chance of him making it to the end of this term.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had a bittersweet week.

On Sunday, Meretz MK Ghaida Rinawie Zoabi returned to the coalition after quitting three days earlier, in what will go down in history as one of the most pitiful political flip-flops Israel has ever seen – and the bar is pretty high. To think back to last Thursday night, when Rinawie Zoabi said on national TV that viewers need to get used to the word of an Arab woman that is never broken, only to see it broken a few days later, was simply sad.

AP — Ra’am party head Mansour Abbas said Thursday he would not use the word “apartheid” to describe relations between Jews and Arabs within the country.

Amnesty International last week joined two other well-known human rights groups in saying that Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians within its borders and in the West Bank and Gaza amount= to apartheid. Israel rejects those allegations as

Bennett's coalition government: From consensus to constant crises - analysis

Parties across the spectrum have realized that only when they threaten and take extreme steps do they get what they want. Now, will have to figure out how to go back to deciding by consensus.

When Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s government was established in June, the eight parties that built the most diverse coalition in Israel’s history promised to make every decision by consensus and maintain political quiet.

At first they succeeded. They passed the first state budget in three years and did their best to avoid stepping on one another’s toes.

Ra’am’s success is Israel’s failure

The mask is now off: Knesset member Mansour Abbas and his colleagues want to use their membership in the coalition as leverage to dismantle Israel's Jewish identity.

(November 14, 2021 / JNS) When Prime Minister Naftali Bennett asked to meet with King Abdullah of Jordan in July, Abdullah agreed but insisted the meeting be kept secret. When Bennett’s office leaked the meeting to the Israeli press, the regime-controlled Jordanian media largely ignored the story.

In stark contrast, Abdullah initiated his meeting Tuesday with Mansour Abbas, deputy head of the Southern Branch of the Islamic Movement and chairman of the

Arab legislator charts new course in Israeli politics

Mansour Abbas, head of the United Arab List (Ra’am Party), has taken Israeli politics in new directions. No Arab politician has had anything like the impact he has on Israeli politics. And because of his star turn as a power broker and deal maker, and his willingness to speak out, he’s now in the spotlight.

His ascent began when Abbas stepped into Israeli coalition politics, a first for an Arab legislator. He instantly became a player, given the narrow margins in Israel’s parliament. Israel’s Arab citizens make up more than 20 percent, or about 1.9

Hypocritical Israeli coalition politics get ugly

In the battle for political survival, anything goes. As the threat to Jerusalem goes unchallenged, the government OKs funding for Hamas while Netanyahu encourages thuggery at the Western Wall.

(November 5, 2021 / JNS) For some observers of the Israeli political scene, there’s only one thing that matters. For the Biden administration, the crucial question is whether the outcome of the maneuvering in Jerusalem between the various political parties will result in a situation that will allow them to begin the process of undoing former President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

The world’s future is in the hands of an Israeli Islamist — if we’re lucky

With creativity and pragmatism, MK Mansour Abbas is showing the nations how to bridge the realms of representative democracy and religion.

The West has got it wrong on religion.

All over the West, in the rich countries of Western Europe especially, you see a culture based on the assumption that religion is just a thing of the past – a dangerous, harmful, backward manifestation of the patriarchy used to oppress
