Farewell Herzi Halevi, uniformed embodiment of our national tragedy, leader of the fightback

A resilient and decent man, he knows nothing will ever obscure the catastrophic consequence of the IDF’s failure, under his command, to give even minimal credence to the evidence that Hamas was preparing to invade.

So farewell, then, to Herzi Halevi, the IDF chief of staff on whose watch Hamas burst through Israel’s obscenely unprotected border to carry out the deadliest one-day attack in our country’s modern history.

Ukraine’s Lessons for Israel

In the months and weeks that led up to Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine, Western powers signaled clearly that they were prepared to accept the disappearance of Ukraine as an independent state. U.S. President Joe Biden virtually invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade in late January when he said that a “minor incursion” would leave NATO flat-footed. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, like his predecessor Angela Merkel, served as the Kremlin’s unofficial spokesman in Europe.

But once Russian forces invaded, the West’s plans to yell a bit and look away went awry. The Ukrainians failed to play their assigned role of Paschal lambs. Instead, they rallied around their flag and their president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Bennett’s mission to Moscow could help Ukraine. But can he stop a new Iran deal?

The Israeli prime minister sought to mediate a halt to Putin’s aggression. But the wild card is Russia’s role in brokering a new Iran deal that poses an existential threat to the Jewish state.

(March 6, 2022 / JNS) After more than a week of being criticized for his lack of outrage about Russia’ invasion of Ukraine, Israeli Prime Minister Naftfali Bennett sought to reverse the script by undertaking a mission of peace that no one else seemed able to attempt.

Nick Cave: Invasion of Ukraine isn’t the same as Israeli-Palestinian conflict

We need air defenses from Israel, not goodwill statements, Lviv commander tells ToI

Maksym Kozytskyy urges Israel to join others providing arms, telling The Times of Israel that Iron Dome systems would have let Ukraine ‘prevail in the air’.

LVIV, Ukraine — Ukraine needs Israeli weapons far more than it needs sympathetic statements from Jerusalem, a top official in western Ukraine said Thursday, joining the country’s leadership in urging Jerusalem to help arm their embattled military.

“We don’t need the support, but we need the weapons to protect ourselves,” Lviv Oblast governor Maksym Kozytskyy told The Times of Israel.
