In its landmark study of American Jewry in 2020, the Pew Research Center reported that there were an estimated 7.5 million Jews of all ages in the United States.

Now, in a new study released Monday, the center says the number is actually more like 5.7 million.

What happened to 1.8 million American Jews? For the purpose of its latest report, which focuses on global religious population change, Pew is counting only those who self-identify with Judaism as a religion rather than those who identify as Jewish due to “ethnicity, culture or family background.”

Scheduled for June 16-18 at United Nations headquarters in New York, it will now focus on determining steps toward recognition rather than recognition itself.

The indestructible myth of famine in Gaza

Universalism is a secular religion whose falsehoods are protected by a doctrine of infallibility.

(May 8, 2025 / JNS)  Yet again, the myth has been revived that there is a famine in the Gaza Strip.

This claim, which has done so much to incite attacks on Jews, has been promulgated repeatedly by mainstream Western media during the past 18 months of war. It is a lie that distorts yet another lie.

Time and again, U.N. agencies and NGOs have warned that famine and starvation are imminent. But this has never happened. More food has been admitted to Gaza than people need.

Israel should annex at least part of Judea and Samaria

Mike Huckabee, Trump’s pick for ambassador to Israel, is “someone who has a long record of being vocally supportive of annexation.”

(March 25, 2025 / JNS)  Israel’s strength stems from its people, but its continued presence on the Jewish nation’s historic homeland is vastly important as well—both from a security as well as a nationalistic perspective.

With a deeply pro-Israel U.S. administration currently in the White House under President Donald Trump’s second term, the question many Israelis have today is whether Israel will annex any part of Judea or Samaria.

The Trump administration is warning Iran of “severe consequences” if it rejects Washington’s nuclear deal proposal, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.

“If they don’t accept these terms, it’s not going to be a good day for the Iranians,” an unnamed senior U.S. official told the WSJ.

The U.S. proposal, which is defined as a “term sheet,” is reportedly intended as Washington’s foundation for a broader framework aimed at addressing the Iranian nuclear threat through diplomatic channels.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an unusually sharp rebuke on Monday evening after a statement by the leaders of the UK, France, and Canada, who threatened to recognize a Palestinian state and to issue sanctions if Israel didn’t stop the Gaza offensive and restore aid to the enclave.

“By asking Israel to end a defensive war for our survival before Hamas terrorists on our border are destroyed and by demanding a Palestinian state, the leaders in London, Ottawa and Paris are offering a huge prize for the genocidal attack on Israel on October 7 while inviting more such atrocities,” Netanyahu hit back in a statement.

Israel won’t work with UN relief chief sans apology, Danon says

“We are not planning a genocide. This is outrageous that a senior U.N. official would use that language,” the Israeli envoy told JNS.

(May 21, 2025 / JNS)  Danny Danon, the Israeli envoy to the United Nations, expects an apology from Tom Fletcher, the U.N. under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, for his comments last week about Gaza to the U.N. Security Council.

“For those killed and those whose voices are silenced, what more evidence do you need now? Will you act decisively to prevent genocide and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law?” Fletcher told the council on May 13. “Or will you say instead that ‘we did all we could?’”
