Defense Minister Israel Katz on Tuesday directly threatened the life of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warning him that he could end up like killed former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
This constitutes the clearest escalation of Israel considering assassinating Khamenei to date.
The threat by Katz allowed maneuvering room since, technically, Hussein was actually killed by his own people after an extended period of running and hiding after US forces toppled his regime in Iraq.
But the threat was clear that Israel could either directly target Khamenei or bring about his fall from power, leaving him to be killed by millions of Iranians who oppose his rule.
Previously, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu entertained the idea of killing Khamenei if it might end the war sooner and if Iran continues to fire ballistic missiles at Israel.
Trump administration has reportedly vetoed Israel's assassination plan
Multiple US officials have said that the Trump administration has to date vetoed an Israeli attack on Khamenei, but Israeli officials have said they might go ahead anyway at some point if more Israelis continue to get killed by Iranian ballistic missiles.
