European powers warn they’ll trigger “snapback” unless Tehran makes real nuclear progress.

Britain, France and Germany have warned they will restore United Nations sanctions on Iran by the end of August if the regime fails to make meaningful progress towards reviving its nuclear deal commitments.
The three countries – known as the E3 – met in New York this week to discuss reactivating the 2015 nuclear accord’s “snapback” clause, which allows for the automatic return of sanctions if Iran breaches the agreement.
French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot said: “Without a verifiable commitment from Iran by the end of August at the latest, France, Germany and the UK will be justified in reapplying the UN sanctions that were lifted 10 years ago.”
The warning followed a phone call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the foreign ministers of all three countries. According to the State Department, the call focused on “ensuring Iran does not develop or obtain a nuclear weapon”.
Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is open to talks – but only if the US and Israel stop targeting its nuclear sites.
“There should be a firm guarantee that such actions will not be repeated,” he told CBS. “The attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities has made it more difficult and complicated to achieve a solution.”
President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed the airstrikes caused such damage that inspectors still haven’t been able to assess the nuclear sites. Iran has since suspended cooperation with the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the IAEA.
The Iranian mission to the UN declined to comment on the threat of renewed sanctions.
US-Iran talks earlier this year had made limited progress before the Israeli and American strikes in June. President Donald Trump and his envoy Steve Witkoff said last week negotiations would resume “soon”, though no date has been set.
Iran says its nuclear programme is peaceful. “The doors of diplomacy will never slam shut,” Araghchi said.
If triggered, the snapback would reinstate a wide range of UN sanctions – including restrictions on arms sales, missile development, and international financial transactions.
