Selfie from Beresheet
Israel’s tiny Moon-bound spacecraft ‘Beresheet’ (Genesis) has posted its first selfie 23,360 miles from Earth.
The spacecraft, which is currently orbiting the Earth before it enters its final trajectory, sent the photo back to engineers in Yehud in Israel.
Beresheet is Israel’s first major space exploration programme and a successful touchdown on the Earth’s satellite would be a first for a privately-funded initiative, because all past Moon landings were paid for by nation states.
Last week Israeli engineers tinkered with the craft’s trajectory and mechanics, performing “computer resets” and “corrective measures” in which Beresheet’s engine was activated for four minutes in order to put it back on its way to the Moon in an elliptical orbit where the farthest point from Earth is 81,300 miles away.
